European Parliament has set the pace on privacy reform
Sean Kelly MEP, Industry Rapporteur for Data Protection, has today called on EU Heads of State and Government assembled at the European Council to follow the lead of the European Parliament and prioritise progress in data protection reform.
The Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee set the pace on Monday last by handing us a mandate for final negotiations, building on the good work and progress achieved under the Irish EU Presidency and Minister Alan Shatter.
“The citizens of Europe are calling for a strong new data protection law. We have worked hard in the European Parliament to progress this important file in light of the revelations surrounding net-tapping and other privacy concerns.
“The European Parliament has set the pace, working closely with Commission Vice President Viviane Reding. The European Council needs to keep up with our tempo. I call for a strong mandate to be included in the Council Conclusions so we can get the Trilogue process up and running.
“We cannot afford to wait any longer, we must seize the opportunity to agree a wide reaching reform in the interests of EU citizens and EU industry,” he concluded.
